Support Susan Nash for the NUS Block of 12!

As the education officer at Leeds University Union I have proven I can lead EFFECTIVE campaigns fighting for student rights on a variety of LOCAL but also NATIONAL issues.

As a block member I would provide valuable resources and knowledge to campaigns led by officers and activists.

As a block member I would bring my PASSION for student rights & student representation and use it to support the great work that is already being undertaken in local FE and HE unions.

I want to be on the block of 12 because I believe I can apply what I have learnt and with my experience lead some great campaigns which will win IMPORTANT changes for our students!!!

Here are some areas I am passionate about and want to continue to fight for:

FAIR FUNDING- despite what the government says the current system is not fit for purpose. Business has failed to contribute, Universities are still underfunded and its students who are disproportionely forking the bill. '09 is not far off. WE need to prepare and work together to prevent the further marketisation of OUR education.

ANTI FASCISM/ ANTI RACISM- We need to continue to celebrate our diverse membership, seek to cater to our diverse needs and campaign against those that seek to overturn 'No Platform' policies and open our campuses up to groups like the BNP.

GREEN CAMPUSES- Climate change may have become a fashionable issue, but we are still far from tackling the behaviour and changing the attitudes of those around us. As active members in the community we have a responsibility to take the lead, pressure the govt and local authorities but also change the habits of our generation. We can act nationally but also locally-like banning plastic bags, reducing the carbon emissions from the union or stocking more ethical goods in your union shop/canteen.

EDUCATE-EMPOWER-MOBILIZE: NUS is a powerful organisation. NUS has defeated governments, been a major force in international struggles and even overturned the world's largest bank. We need to show our members that the NUS does win rights for OUR students but through the NUS OUR MEMBERS can play a bigger role, not only effectively campaigning for our members but shaping the wider political agenda. We need to ENGAGE with the wider democratic processes to ensure students needs are at the heart of any election campaign, and that NUS remains a strong union which wins locally, nationally & internationally.
